Before choosing a fountain pen ink color, check compatibility with your pen and filling system. Then consider black, blue or blue-black for your handwriting and paper.
Use ink intended for fountain pens
Drawing, stamp and printer inks are not automatically suitable. Follow your pen manufacturer's guidance, especially for carbon-based or specialty formulas. Color alone does not tell you composition, water resistance or care requirements.
Black, blue or blue-black?
Black
A classic choice with strong contrast on light paper, suited to notes, lists and correspondence. Black ink is not automatically permanent; check the manufacturer's stated properties for important documents.
Blue
Blue adds color while remaining understated, making it useful for class notes, planners and letters. Not all blue inks are erasable.
Blue-black
Blue-black offers a dark tone with a blue nuance. Results vary by ink, pen and paper, so test it in your usual notebook.
Our BAOKE MS217 40 ml fountain pen ink comes in black, blue and blue-black, as individual bottles, packs of six or a three-bottle assortment depending on the option.
Cartridges or bottled ink?
Cartridges are replaced when empty, but their size must match the pen. Bottled ink is used with a compatible converter or piston. A converter may not be included with the pen.
- For a cartridge pen, check converter compatibility before buying a bottle.
- For a piston pen, use compatible ink and follow the filling instructions.
- For a gift set, confirm the exact included accessories.
The BAOKE fountain pen gift set with ink includes an ink bottle and six cartridges. Its metal fountain pen has a medium stainless steel nib. Single and duo compositions vary by selected set.
When should you use carbon black ink?
Use carbon-based ink only when your pen manufacturer allows it. Our BAOKE MS218 25 ml carbon black ink is available singly or in packs of three or six. Follow cleaning guidance and avoid letting ink dry in the feed. The word “carbon” alone does not guarantee water resistance or archival properties.
Changing ink colors
Empty and clean the parts specified by the manufacturer before switching inks. Clean water is suitable for routine rinsing of many pens, but specialty inks may need a specific method. Do not mix inks unless their manufacturer confirms compatibility. Close the pen cap and ink bottle after use.

Common questions
Can fountain pen ink refill a gel pen? No; use the refill designed for that model. Should I mix blue and black? Choose a formulated blue-black ink unless the manufacturer permits mixing. Which bottle size should I start with? Try one compatible bottle before buying a larger pack. How long it lasts depends on writing frequency and nib flow.
