How to Clean and Care for a Fountain Pen

Learn when and how to clean a cartridge, converter or piston fountain pen, remove dried ink and avoid damaging its finish.

A clean fountain pen helps maintain steady ink flow and an enjoyable writing feel. Routine cleaning usually requires clean water and patience rather than full disassembly.

When should you clean it?

Clean when flow becomes irregular, before changing inks, after a long period without use or before extended storage. A pen that writes well with the same ink does not need cleaning after every refill. Follow the pen and ink manufacturer's instructions.

Cartridge and converter pens

  1. Remove the cartridge or converter over a sink or container.
  2. Rinse the nib and grip section with cool or slightly lukewarm water until the water is nearly clear.
  3. Clean the converter separately by filling and emptying it with water several times.
  4. Gently blot the outside with a soft, lint-free cloth and allow the parts to air-dry before refilling.

Do not rub, bend or try to straighten the nib while cleaning.

Piston-fill pens

Empty the remaining ink. Place the nib in clean water, operate the piston to draw water in, then expel it. Repeat until clear. Do not dismantle the piston unless the manufacturer specifically provides for user maintenance.

What if the ink has dried?

Begin with a gentle rinse. If the materials and manufacturer instructions allow it, soak only the nib and section in cool water for several hours, then rinse again. Do not automatically immerse the entire pen: wood, finishes and metal components may not tolerate soaking.

If flow remains blocked, seek appropriate servicing instead of inserting needles or hard objects into the feed.

Products and methods to avoid

  • Very hot water.
  • Alcohol, bleach, solvents and harsh household cleaners.
  • Forced disassembly.
  • Soaking the entire pen without checking its materials.
  • Refilling a section still full of water, which can dilute the ink.

Specialty inks may need a specific cleaning method. Follow the manufacturer's guidance rather than improvising a cleaning mixture.

Between writing sessions

Replace the cap promptly to limit drying. For transport, a nib-up position may help reduce leakage, depending on the pen. Before long-term storage, empty, rinse and dry the pen.

Do I need to remove the nib?

Usually not. Remove the nib or feed only if the manufacturer says the model is designed for this and you know the correct procedure.
